The Coming Darkness: Segment Five

Ish Lani stood on a balcony staring up at the sky. His thoughts were directed to the crew of the Koororant. He thought of hard it must be for them to sacrifice themselves for the sake of his people. As he finally saw the explosion in the sky, he bowed his head in a moment of prayer to the gods. When he raised his head, he could see the fragments of the Koororant hurled towards his planet.

After the end of the war, he had hoped the planet would have time to heal at last. Sadly, he was wrong. Then, shortly after noticing the falling debris, he saw the sparkling green dust drifting down toward the planet. The look in his eyes turned from sorrow at the loss of the Entkari to a horrible fear. He quickly entered back inside and slammed the doors closed behind him. Once in, he shouted loudly, "Ambassador!"

Ambassador Tuubarz slithers in from the next room. "What is so urgent that it warrants such a commotion my dear Speaker," said in his usual calm voice.

"Hurry and finish your transmission. We need to go."

"Fortunately for you," responded Tuubarz, "I had just finished my message when you bellowed."

"Good, then follow me." Ish Lani began to leave without waiting for further response from Tuubarz or to see if he was even following.

Despite the rudeness of the Ashralli speaker, Tuubarz did indeed follow. As he slithered after Ish Lani, who was setting a fierce pace, he asked, "And where are we going?"

"Away from this place," Ish Lani answered curtly.

"Why in such a hurry?"

Ish Lani did not turn, but continued straight ahead. Then he replied as if it the answer was only stating the obvious, "Simple, death is coming and I think it would be wise if we are not here when it arrives."

In the city of Patarus people gathered in the streets to watch the spectacle in the sky. Streaks of red sped across the sky while a blanket of green dust which sparkled in the light rained down upon them. Few understood the depths of what had just occurred. Those red streaks were fragments of the Koororant burning up in the atmosphere. Despite the horrible circumstances, it was a wondrous sight to see. People throughout the city as well as across the rest of the world stepped out of their houses into the streets, out onto balconies, and even onto rooftops just to catch a clear view. Soon their world would face the aftermath of this incident, but for the moment they could bask in the beauty. As the green dust fell to the ground, there were those who tilted their head back so it could wash over them. Others danced in the streets as if the colored dust marked a celebration. After the horrors of the war which ended, they were a people that wanted to bask in the joys they could find. Unfortunately, such joys rarely last long. This one was no exception. It was then that it started.
